The Irish Council for Psychotherapy (ICP) is the national umbrella body for Psychotherapy in Ireland and a not-for-profit organisation. ICP is a member of the European Association for Psychotherapy (EAP). It is also the national organisation responsible for awarding psychotherapists with the European Certificate of Psychotherapy (ECP) in Ireland.
The ICP works on behalf of its member sections and organisations. These are the professional psychotherapy organisations that train, accredit and reaccredit individual psychotherapists working to particular modalities:
- Family Therapy Association of Ireland (FTAI)
- The Irish Association of Humanistic & Integrative Psychotherapy (IAHIP)
- The Association for Psychoanalysis & Psychotherapy in Ireland (APPI)
- Irish Analytical Psychology Association (IAPA)
- Irish Forum for Child & Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (IFCAPP)
- Irish Forum for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (IFPP)
- Irish Group Analytic Society (IGAS)
- Irish Psycho-Analytical Association (IPAA)
- Northern Ireland Institute of Human Relations (NIIHR)
These professional bodies are responsible for ensuring that their accredited and pre-accredited psychotherapists adhere to the highest ethical and practice guidelines. They are also responsible for managing complaints, according to their agreed procedures. The EAP provides the Ethical Guidelines which outline the general standards of professional conduct to which ICP member organisations must subscribe.

ICP contributes to public health by encouraging the highest standards of training, practice, and on-going education of psychotherapists.
ICP also promotes psychotherapy as an effective intervention for good mental and emotional health. Currently, it represents over 1,700 psychotherapists nationwide. ICP acts as a link between those who are looking for psychotherapy services and those who provide psychotherapy services.
